Mass Communication Department celebrates accreditation
The Mass Communication Department celebrated on Sunday, June 16th, 2013 its international accreditation awarded by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC)
The accreditation status was confirmed in a letter by Chair of the Council’s Review Committee following a site visit to the department and its classrooms last January during which members assessed the curriculum and study plan and submitted a report for approval of accreditation to the Executive Committee and Council.
The department’s success is a culmination of a six-year exercise that included an intensive self-study as well as review visits from ACAEJMC members, with full participation of the College and Department administration, faculty, staff and students. As a result, a new study plan was adopted in 2011 which included 3 tracks: Journalism, Radio and Television, and Strategic Communication and Public Relations.
QU President Prof Sheikha Abdulla Al-Misnad congratulated the department on its achievement, which raises the Mass Communication Program to an international level and standard. She noted that the Department’s accreditation success is an important achievement for the department, the College and the University as a whole as part of QU’s continuing efforts towards accreditation for all its colleges, departments and programs.
CAS Dean Dr Eiman Mustafawi commended the department’s students, staff and faculty for their contribution towards accreditation success. ”The Mass Communication Department joins other departments and programs at CAS that gained similar recognition from world-renowned international accrediting bodies. This is a big leap forward in our determination to raise the standards of all our programs to international performance and excellence”.
Dr Mustafawi noted that the Mass Communication Program is the first such in the Gulf, Middle East and North African region, and the second in the world outside the US to have achieved such a distinction.
Department Head Dr. Mahmoud Galander said: “This raises the department to the level of international departments and colleges accredited by ACAEJMC. It will help our graduates to pursue further study at international universities that require degrees from accredited programmes.”
As part of the academic plan, the department has adopted 11 educational objectives it expects all graduates to have successfully obtained by the end of their time in the department. Those objectives are as follows:
- To understand and apply media law and principles of freedom of speech and of press appropriate to professional practice.
- To demonstrate an understanding of the history and role of professionals and institutions in shaping communications.
- To critically evaluate their won work and that of others for accuracy and fairness, clarity, appropriate style and grammatical correctness.
- To comprehend concepts and apply theories in the use and presentation of images and information.
- To demonstrate technical skills in writing and reporting correctly and clearly for different audiences.
- To conduct research and evaluate information by methods appropriate to the communications professions in which they work, including the application of basic numerical and statistical concepts.
- To think critically, creatively and independently.
- To acquire and apply an ethical framework for the practices of mass communication and journalism.
- To demonstrate an understanding of the diversity of groups in a global society in relationship to communication.
- To analyze and interpret media messages.
- To apply tools and technologies appropriate for the communications professions in which they work.
قسم الإعلام يحتفل بحصوله على الاعتماد الأكاديمي
إحتفل قسم الإعلام يوم الأحد 16 يونيو 2013 بحصوله على الاعتماد الأكاديمي من مجلس الاعتماد الأكاديمي في تعليم الصحافة والاتصال الجماهيري. ويتفرّد قسم الإعلام في حصوله على هذا الاعتماد ليكون الاول من نوعه في الشرق الأوسط والعالم العربي والثاني خارج حدود الولايات المتحدة. وقد حضر الفعالية رئيس جامعة قطر د. شيخة بنت عبدالله المسند وعميد كلية الآداب والعلوم د. إيمان مصطفوي ورئيس قسم الإعلام د. محمود قلندر وممثلي هيئة الاعتماد، بالإضافة إلى حضور العديد من الشخصيات الإعلامية القطرية البارزة في الدولة.
وفي كلمتها بهذه المناسبة، قالت رئيس جامعة قطر د. شيخة بنت عبدالله المسند: أن حصول قسم الإعلام على الاعتماد الأكاديمي هو دليل جلي على المستوى الأكاديمي الذي وصلت إليه الجامعة خاصة وأن دولة قطر أخذت على عاتقها منذ أعوام خلت تطوير مهنة الإعلام في الدولة، وهو ما يحملنا مسؤولية تخريج طلبة على مستوى يليق بمستوى اهتمام الدولة بالقطاع الإعلامي".
وأضافت: "إن حصول قسم الإعلام على الاعتماد الأكاديمي هو نتيجة عمل دؤوب وتكاتف جهود العديد من الأفراد لنصبو إلى هذه النتيجة. كما أن الحصول على الاعتماد إنما هو بداية التميز وهي مرحلة جديدة تلي الاعتماد وسنعمل جميعاً مع قسم الإعلام والطلبة على تحقيقها".
وفي كلمتها الترحيبية، قالت عميد كلية الآداب والعلوم د. إيمان مصطفوي: "تفتخر كلية الآداب والعلوم بحصول برنامج الإعلام على الاعتماد الأكاديمي ليكون البرنامج السادس المعتمد في الكلية بعد برنامج العلوم الحيوية الطبية قبل أيام قليلة وبرنامج الكيمياء في 2009 و برنامج الإحصاء في 2011 وبرنامج بكالوريوس العلوم البيئية في 2012.
و قال د. محمود قلندر رئيس قسم الإعلام: "يسرني أن أقف هنا اليوم للتعبير عن الجهود التي قام بها كل فرد في قسم الإعلام على مدار السنوات الماضية حتى نصل إلى لحظة تحقيق هذا النجاح المبهر بحصولنا على الاعتماد الأكاديمي من مجلس الاعتماد الأكاديمي في تعليم الصحافة والاتصال الجماهيري".
وفي كلمتها بالمناسبة، قالت المدير التنفيذي لمجلس الاعتماد الأكاديمي في تعليم الصحافة والاتصال الجماهيري د. سوزان شو: "أنا معجبة جداً بطرق التدريس التي يطبقها أعضاء هيئة التدريس في قسم الإعلام في الجامعة، كما أني منبهرة من المستوى التعليمي والأكاديمي الذي يتميز به طلبة القسم وحماسهم لاكتساب المزيد من العلوم والمعارف في مجال الإعلام".
وقد أقام قسم الإعلام بمناسبة إحتفاله بالحصول على الإعتماد الأكاديمي ندوة عن الصحافة القطرية المكتوبة. وقد حضر الندوة العديد الإعلاميين مثل, الإعلامية الهام بدر, وخالد الجابر نائب رئيس تحرير جريدة الشرق وخالد السيد رئيس تحرير جريدة البننسولا, وجابر الحرمي رئيس تحرير جريدة الشرق القطرية, وجاسم فخرو رئيس الجمعية الدولية للعلاقات العامة في الشرق الأوسط وغيرهم. وقد ناقش الحضور العديد من المحاور الهامة التي تتعلق بمجال الإعلام كعزوف القطريين عن دراسة الصحافة و عمل المرأة في مجال الإعلام والفرص الوظيفية المتاحة في القطاع الإعلامي وغيرها من الموضوعات ذات الصلة.
