    • Date 4 March 2024
    • Location QATAR UNIVERSITY (I-11)
    • Overview Qatar Transportation and Traffic Safety Center organized a seminar on March 4, 2024 at College of Engineering, Qatar University delivered by Professor Takashi Oguchi from the University of Tokyo, Japan titled Automated Driving Promotion in Japan for the Past Approximately 10 Years. This seminar was hybrid and academics and researchers from Qatar and abroad participated in this seminar.

Japan started a National intensive R&D project so-called SIP (Cross-Ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program) under CSTI (Council for Science, Technology and Innovation) of CAO (Cabinet Office) in Japan in fiscal year 2014, and one of the SIP was related to the "Automated Driving" technology, which was named as SIP-adus (Automated Driving for Universal Services). The presenter had been involved in SIP-adus from April 2016 as the Chair of the "Next Generation Urban Transport Working Group" among three Working Groups in the first phase (FY2014-FY2018), and had been continued to be the Chair of "Business Promotion Working Group" in the second phase (FY2018-2022) of SIP-adus, which terminated in March 2023. The project was rather technology oriented (with clarification between competing area and non-competing technology areas) led by OEM in the first phase, on the other hand, it shifted to be more concerning about the public acceptance and promoting international cooperation and harmonization. The related issues were also shifted from privately-owned cars to public transport. These shifting trends are aligning with International trends in EC and USA. The presenter tries to summarize the SIP-adus from his point of view. The third-phase SIP was started from April 2023 including a part of SIP-adus but much more focusing on to the development of smart mobility platform. On the other hand, METI (Ministry of Economy, Technology and Industry) of Japan started a brand-new program so-called "RoAD to the L4" (FY2021-2025) which includes four themes of driverless vehicle service realization. The fourth project CooL4 (Project to develop cooperative Level 4 automated mobility service in mixed traffic environment), and the presenter is also involved in the project. CooL4 intends to deploy the shuttle bus services connecting the nearest train station and the newly-established third main Campus (Kashiwa Campus) of UTokyo from Level 2 to Level 4 with infrastructure support such as V2I technology. The current condition of CooL4 project was also presented in this talk.

    • Date 6 March 2023
    • Location QATAR UNIVERSITY
    • Overview On March 6, 2023, a pivotal workshop titled "Towards Electrification of Public Transportation in Qatar" was led by Dr. Nuri Onat, marking a significant step forward in the nation's journey towards sustainable transportation. Organized with the aim of fostering dialogue and collaboration among key stakeholders, this event sought to illuminate the path for Qatar's transition to electric public transportation systems.

Hosted by QTTSC, the workshop served as a vibrant platform for the Qatar University community and stakeholders from various sectors to converge, share insights, and deliberate on the electrification of public transport. The gathering drew experts, policymakers, industry leaders, and academics, all united by a common vision for a greener, more sustainable Qatar.

A key highlight of the workshop was the demonstration of how the electrification of public transport can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Qatar. Experts presented compelling evidence and case studies, illustrating the environmental benefits and the potential for enhancing the quality of urban life through reduced air pollution and noise levels.

The workshop underscored the critical role of electrification in achieving Qatar's ambitious environmental and sustainability goals. By bringing together the collective expertise and commitment of the Qatar University community and wider stakeholders, the event catalyzed discussions on practical strategies and innovative solutions to accelerate the adoption of electric public transportation.

As Qatar strides towards its National Vision 2030, the electrification of public transportation emerges as a key pillar in the country's sustainable development agenda. The "Towards Electrification of Public Transportation in Qatar" workshop not only highlighted the imperative for action but also paved the way for collaborative efforts to realize a greener, more sustainable future for all. In the aftermath of this event, Qatar stands poised at the brink of a transportation revolution, ready to embrace the benefits of electrification and lead by example in the global quest for sustainability.

    • Date 21 February 2023

    • Overview On February 21, 2023, QTTSC organized a seminar delivered by Dr. Mohammed Elhenawy on the topic “Safety Evaluation of Vehicle to Infrastructure applications in connected vehicle environment: Ipswich Connected Vehicle Pilot (Australia)”. Cooperative Intelligent Transportation Systems (C-ITS) are deployed in several cities worldwide. Evaluation of their safety benefits in Field Operational Tests (FOT) is needed to demonstrate its benefits and build public awareness and uptake. The result of the evaluation can tell us if the C-ITS algorithms that trigger the safety events, and consequently the Human-Machine Interface (HMI) messages, are appropriately fine-tuned to induce the expected driver behaviour change formulated as a hypothesis. In this seminar, Dr. Mohammed Elhenawy introduced the largest C-ITS FOT in Australia and how we model the big data collected to estimate the crash reduction at a 100% market penetration rate.
