    Minor in Engineering Project Management



    Disclaimer: The Minor in Engineering Project Management is a new program for Engineering students at Qatar University. The information in this page is given for guidance only and will be subject to change.

     

    The purpose of the minor in Engineering Project Management is to train the next generation of engineers in the field of engineering project management that encompasses multiple sub disciplines. The minor delivers a comprehensive approach that focuses on all aspects of an engineering project starting from the initiation, planning, scheduling, developing of cost estimates and budgets, analyzing risks, and planning risk responses and quality control.

     

    A. MINOR REQUIREMENTS

    A minimum of 18 credit hours are required to complete the minor in Engineering Project Management, including the following:

    • A minimum of 12 credit hours in Minor requirements
    • A minimum of 6 credit hours in Minor Electives

    The details of CHs are as follows:

    A.1- For students joining from all of the College of Engineering undergraduate majors except the Civil Engineering major:

    Students must complete 12 credit hours in Minor core courses:

    • MECH 471 Selected Topics I: Introduction to Project Management
    • CVEN 481: Project Planning and Scheduling
    • ACCT 330: Project Cost Accounting and Finance for Engineers
    • CVEN 381: Contracts, Specifications, and Local Regulations

    Students must complete a minimum of 6 CH from the following Minor Electives:

    • CVEN 482: Selected Topics in Construction Engineering and Management
    • CVEN 464: Risk and Safety Management
    • MECH 472: Selected Topics II: Sustainability and Lifecycle cost management
    • MAGT 302: Human resource management
    • CVEN 483: Quantitative Analysis in Engineering Projects

    A.2- For students joining from the Civil Engineering major:

    Students must complete a minimum of 12 credit hours in Minor required courses:

    • MECH 471 Selected Topics I: Introduction to Project Management
    • CVEN 481: Project Planning and Scheduling
    • ACCT 330: Project Cost Accounting and Finance for Engineers
    • CVEN 482: Selected Topics in Construction Engineering and Management

    Students must complete a minimum of 6 CH from the following Minor Electives:

    • CVEN 464: Risk and Safety Management
    • MECH 472: Selected Topics II: Sustainability and Lifecycle cost management
    • MAGT 302: Human resource management
    • CVEN 483: Quantitative Analysis in Engineering Projects

    B. ADMISSION TO THE MINOR

    1. The student should be registered in one of the College Engineering undergraduate majors only;
    2. The student should have completed 60CHs in their majors before starting the minor;
    3. The student should have a minimum GPA of 2.5 out of 4 before starting the minor;
    4. Additional assessment and/or interview might be required.

       

    C. LEARNING OUTCOMES

    The students will have the knowledge and skills to:

    1. Apply engineering project management basic concepts to successfully launch and complete an engineering project.
    2. Demonstrate a good understanding of engineering project management functions including the ability to manage teams and project processes.
    3. Use tools for selection, planning, leading, reporting, tracking and evaluating the success of engineering projects.
    4. Explain and illustrate how projects are funded and how the cost is tracked and managed throughout the project lifecycle.
    5. Acquire critical thinking and analytical decision-making capabilities to investigate complex problems and to propose evidence-based solutions
    6. An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies

       

    D. PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

    1. To provide the engineering students with a broad-based education in engineering project management enabling them to lead engineering functions effectively in both the public and private sectors that will contribute to the development of the country, the region and beyond.
    2. To equip future engineering students with skills and knowledge that are transferable from one sector to another fostering effective interaction, ethical practices, and good communication skills.
    3. To enhance the students’ advancement technical and professional skills to enable them to pursue further education and development by employing lifelong learning skills.
